OSA awards exemplary student orgs and students

The UPLB Office of Student Activities (UPLB-OSA), together with the 51ĀŅĀ× (OVCSA) and the Office of the Chancellor (OC), recognized outstanding students and student organizations at the celebration of OVCSA’s 65th founding anniversary last June 30, 2025, at the Makiling Ballroom Hall, Student Union Building.

The UPLB Natatanging Organisasyon (UNO) recognizes the most outstanding student organization, while the UPLB Natatanging Iskolar ng Bayan (UNIK) recognizes the most outstanding undergraduate student in the university. 

The awardees were selected based on their leadership and organization development activities, service involvement in and out of the university, and promotion of culture and the arts.

51ĀŅĀ×was initially established as the Office of Student Affairs in June 1960 through the initiative of the late Dr. Dioscoro L. Umali, then the dean of the College of Agriculture. The office oversees student welfare and was elevated into the 51ĀŅĀ×at the 1350th UP Board of Regents meeting on February 3, 2020.

UNO 2025 Award recipient

This year’s UNO Award recipient is The UPLB Com Arts Society, an academic organization of communication arts students. 

ā€œIto ay simbolo ng aming naging layunin na magbahagi ng kaalaman at pinaglalaban sa sining, hindi lamang sa loob ng organisasyon, kun’di pati sa mas malawak na komunidad,ā€&²Ō²ś²õ±č;UPLB Com Arts Soc representative Cris Jabriel Cruz said of the UNO Award. 

He explained the organization’s mission to educate people outside the classroom’s four walls, serve, and help create more cultural and art organization spaces. 

Since 1976, UPLB ComArtsSoc has aimed to nurture favorable perceptions of the arts and humanities by providing avenues that focus on the three aspects of writing, speech communication, and theatre arts. UPLB ComArtsSoc bested this year’s 17 nominees for the UNO Award. 


In the organization’s closing statement, the UPLB Com Arts Soc dedicates their award to all artista ng bayan to continue their artistry with bravery and compassion for the nation and the people.

UNIK 2025 Award recipient

Joseph Kyle J. Curbilla, a BS in Agriculture student from the College of Agriculture and Food Science, is the recipient of the 2025 UPLB Natatanging Iskolar ng Bayan (UNIK). 

ā€œPinapatunayan nito na tayo bilang mga ā€œIskolar ng Bayanā€, tayo bilang mga artista ng bayan, ay may malaking papel na ginagampanan dito sa unibersidad,ā€&²Ō²ś²õ±č;Curbilla said, highlighting the role of UP students as bearers of social responsibility and public service.

Curbilla further emphasized that the award carries a heavy weight of responsibility and accountability. His involvement in different organizations was ignited and rooted in the stories of the Desaparecidos, numerous UPLB alums, and renowned activists; hence, Curbilla dedicates the award to all artista ng bayan who inspired him.

As a member of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Scholars’ Society, the head of Umalohokan Inc., and the chairperson of Kulturang Ugnayan ng Kabataan Alay sa Bayan – KULAYAN-UPLB, Curbilla’s involvement in leadership, public service, and especially the promotion of culture and the arts, was acknowledged through the UNIK Award.

UPLB UNO and UNIK 2025 Seal of Excellence recipients

The UPLB Economics Society, the UPLB Statistical Society, and the UP Society of Agricultural Engineering Students are this year’s recipients of the UNO Seal of Excellence in Leadership. The UPLB Economics Society also received the award last year.

The Seals of Excellence in Leadership for students were awarded to Geraldine T. Balingit, a BS Agriculture student, University Student Council (USC) chairperson, a member of the UP Agricultural Society, Umalohokan, Inc., and The UPLB Pre-Law Society

A second recipient is Marcus Liam T. Saladino, a BS Development Communication student and member of the UP Community Broadcasters’ Society.

JB A. Balines, BS Statistics, and a member of the Alliance of Statistics Majors UPLB, UPLB Career Assistance Program, UP Banahaw, and UP Painters’ Club, was the sole recipient of the Seal of Excellence in Public Service.

The UNO and UNIK awardees received plaques and cash prizes of P15,000 and P10,000, respectively, while minor awardees received plaques of appreciation from the OVCSA. 

The UNO and UNIK Awards annually recognize exemplary individual and organizational performance in leadership, public service, culture, and the arts in UPLB. These awards are aligned with OSA’s goal to promote the Iskolar ng Bayan as marangal, mahusay, maka-masa, at makabayan.
