29 August 2025 | Jason Sardua & Joshua Michael G. Jonas |
Twenty-five (25) outbound and prospective exchange students of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) attended the 5th Send-off, Onboarding, And pre-depaRture (SOAR) Orientation, held virtually on August 6, 2025.
The orientation, organised by the UPLB Learning Resource Center (LRC), the UPLB Office of International Linkages (OIL), and the Society of Exchange Students-UP (SExS-UP), aimed to prepare the exchange students for their academic and cultural immersion in partner universities abroad.
UPLB OIL Director Anna Floresca F. Firmalino, together with Mobility for Vigor and Excellence – University of the Philippines (MOVE-UP) Program Manager Maya R. Vicencio and Program Associate Melea T. Roxas of the UP System-OIL, discussed administrative requirements and documents, course substitutions, and grant liquidation concerns.
SExS-UP President Frances Marielle A. Nicolas introduced the organization’s role in supporting exchange students and offered guidance to the participants.
In the first session, “CHECKLIST: Travel Tips and Getting Settled,” Dr. Maria Claret L. Tsuchiya of the College of Arts and Sciences emphasized the importance of adapting to new environments and provided practical advice on travel essentials, legal documents, medical records, and cultural preparation.
The second session, “CONNECT: Preparing for Your Study Abroad,” featured BS Agriculture student and exchange alumnus Justin V. Plana, who shared his academic and cultural experiences at Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic.
The last session during the orientation, “CREATE: How to Make Meaningful Memories out of Your Exchange Program,” allowed the participants to interact in breakout rooms with former exchange students who shared first-hand experiences from their respective host countries: France, Indonesia, Taiwan, Canada, the Czech Republic, Japan, and South Korea.
LRC Director Mariyel Hiyas C. Liwanag concluded the program by acknowledging the participants, speakers, and organizers’ contributions to the orientation. She also reminded the students of their vital role as goodwill ambassadors, representing the university and the entire country.
